W. Riemer 1949 Journal 29 Jan. Upper San Leandro Reservoir, Contra Costa and Alameda cos, Calif. examined. Though water quiet and ideal appearing no Triturus seen. 3 Feb. Pinehurst, Contra Costa Co., Calif. Because of mild rain during evening toured road between Orinda and Eastport. Not raining at time except for short distance beyond Pinehurst, where it rained very hard. Triturus moderately abundant on rd. and seemingly uniformly distributed, except absent in elevated areas. Purpose of trip to determine if numbers more concentrated at any particular part of area. No such determination seemed possible. Tour made between 2430 and 0200. During late afternoon examined entire course of stream from above John Hendrickson's study area to a quarter mile below rd. fork. No Triturus or egg clusters seen although many spots appeared ideal. Decided to set up two study areas, one in redwoods between Stebbins' and Hendrickson's area, one in just
