D. Riemer 1948 Journal 19 July State Hwy 33, Central Valley, Calif. to Newport Beach. Animals noted: 1 Pituophis taken in Fresno Co., 1 Pituophis (DOR) seen in Merced Co. (see the species account). Many water birds— herons, egrets, swallows — seen about marshy areas and canals in Stanislaus Co. State Hwy 33 S to Mendota is through cultivated farm land and not particularly suitable it seems for night road collecting. S of Mendota to Taft the area traversed at night this trip appeared exceedingly barren. It is doubted if collecting is ever very profitable. Only single specimen — Pituophis — seen during entire night. A factor likely affecting the take is that a full moon was shining brightly. Weather was warm and windless and seemingly ideal for reptiles. Road should be checked again when moon not out.
