Wild cat Canyon, Tilden Park, Contra Costa
22 May Co., Calif. and most of summer
visitors apparently here. Warvinger
only winter visitor yet here
and have probably become resident.
Observations closed at 1130.
22 May Head of Hamilton Gulch, Berkeley Hills, Berkeley,
Alameda Co., Calif. Observations begun
1400 in Sceloporus study area. Weather
hot at time and little activity. On
first round of area one Coluber lateralis
frightened up. This is second one in
area. Supposedly rare from Berkeley
Hills. Failed to capture animal
though very much would have liked
to. A new race may be represented
here. Time: 1410. By 1430 heat of
day past though still warm.
At 1645 Coluber constrictor mormon
brought to attention by actions of
Red-dock. Snake captured. At 1745
another morman of same size (about
24 inches) noted in grass just 6 feet
from spot first one found. This specimen
also captured. Both removed from area
to keep down predation of Sceloporus
in study area. Noted that female California
Purple Finch also sings from tops
of conifers adjacent to area but
song less intricate and shorter
duration than that of male. Olive-sided
Flycatcher heard. Observations suspended
at 1837.
