May Bay Farm Island, Alameda Co., Calif.
Tide in coming. (Dehnel) Probably due to automatic separation because of ability to feed in different situations, i.e., Sandpipers, very shallow water; Dowitchers, deeper water, etc. Food probably largely invertebrates though Dehnel says unknown. Noted that all shorebirds tend to fly very close to water usually even though sometimes for long distances. This in contrast to land birds which generally seek altitude rapidly. Apparently little sexual dimorphism in shorebirds. Reason not known by author. Plumage changes generally to very somber tones for winter. Reason again unknown. Most breed in far North (Dehnel). Weather: warm, sunny, clear, little wind.

Plotting of Scolopous movements begun 1610. See species account for particulars. New specimen captured and marked. Covy of Calif. Quail pass by in chaparral at 7:50. Wren-tits calling throughout period of observation. Purple Finch singing from top of conifer. Generally bird life sparse. Observations closed at 1800. Apparently necessary to devise new method recording data for this study.
