Great diversity in bill shapes of
shore-birds. Sandpipers bill
short and straight can only
feed in shallow water and only
directly in front if feed. Dowitcher
and legs long and straight; can
feed in different deeper water and
somewhat farther in front if feet.
Curlew, bill long, down-curved;
can feed much farther in front
if feet. Godwit, bill long, up-curved;
can feed for in front 1 foot and
shovel along just beneath surface.
All these adaptations may be
factors which prevent direct
interspecific competition. Such
competition would be exceedingly
important and vital if it did
exist since all species necessarily
must feed at water's edge. Lack
of competition probably valid since
no animosity apparent interspecifically
