J. Riemer 1948 Journal 17 Apr. Strawberry Canyon, U.C. Campus, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. Of each other. Mexican Bluebirds, House Finches, American Goldfinches, and Pine Siskins also seen here. Followed along road to Botanical Gardens. Weather varied between sunny and overcast throughout morning. Areas traversed during morning included wet and dry chaparral, grassland, and non- native vegetation in Botanical Gardens. List of species observed: 1. Red-tail Hawk (only after sun emerged) 2. Allen's Hummingbird (common over entire area and conspicuous. Apparently nesting time). 3. Steller Jay (willow) 4. Bush-tit (dry chaparral) 5. Wren-tit 6. Hermit Thrush (wet chaparral) 7. Mexican Bluebird (grassland) 8. Orange-crowned Warbler (willow) 9. Black-headed Grosbeak (non-native canifer and willow and oak) 10. Calif. Purple Finch (conifer, oak and eucalyptus; extremely common) 11. Brown Towhee (oak) 12. Pine Siskin (conifers and grassland) 13. Oregon Junco (conifers) 14. White-crowned Sparrow (wet chaparral) 15. House Finch (conifers & grassland)
