Golden-crowned heard behind Bowles Hall top of conifer. Weather: cool and overcast though bright. Light rain yesterday. No noticeable wind. Allen & Rufous Hummers creating racket & squeaks from willow clump next to conifer above mentioned. Miller believes nesting activities. Purple Finches heard in all quarters. Group began ascend of "big C" trail. 0910 sun appears, overcast largely gone. Trails along slope of N side of canyon followed thru grassy area interspersed with chaparral in tributary stream courses. In one such chaparral area, Wren-tit and White-crowned Sparrow noted. At main side ridge of S-facing slope two Allen Hummers raced by in hot pursuit
