Journal 12.a. 28 Feb. Strawberry Canyon, N.C. Campus, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. highway. Because I lack of grass presumably, but very few pocket gopher mounds seen. Signs of various animals in form of burrows and cavities seen beneath rocks and logs. In thinner part I grave S. Benson "called" up several Song Sparrows from dense low cover. Tangled long grass in an ungrazed area showed numerous rodent runways and "rooms" with little of cut grass, a characteristic of Microtus, said S. Benson. Said also Peromyscus truei found in dense chaparral whereas P. californicus plus moles and shrews chiefly in wet chaparral environments. Behind Botanical gardens Wood Rat nests seen in dense poison oak thicket and up in Pinus radiata grove. Group proceeded by road back to parking area starting point, by road, at 1115. After lunch returns made at 1245 to Strawberry pool area. Light rain occurred between 1400 and 1415. Sun reappeared again warmly and strongly. Shelter from rain taken in old building just below pool.
