Hassen Volcanic National Park, Calif.
5 Aug. Robert Stebbins, his wife and two
children, and myself left Canyon,
Contra Costa Co. on the morning of
date, proceeded on U.S. 99E, by
U.C. truck #112 to Red Bluff.
Leaving Red Bluff at 1930 we
proceeded on Calif #36 into Hassen
Park.
Just after dark a large rattle-
snake, probably C. viridis, was
observed crossing the road in
the headlights. An unsuccessful
attempt to kill or capture it
was made. Other animals
observed on the road included
a fox, numerous rodents, among
them a kangaroo rat, and several
toads. One toad, which was taken,
is entered in R.C. Stebbins' field
notes.
Camp was set up near Manzanita
Lake about 2330.
