May 4
Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington
storms. Drive up highway 99 through Woodland,
Kelso, Chehalis, Centralia to Olympic and
Tacoma to stay at Murray Johnsons house
for the night.
May 5
Set out 12 gopher traps at 2 mis. S Roy
in Pierce Co. while at this locality two garter
snakes were taken - one a yellow and black
coloration, the other a greenish and black
coloration. Still staying at Johnsons place
at 105 Tacoma St., Tacoma.
May 6
Went out to retrieve the traps set out yesterday
and no gophers had been caught. Dr. Benson,
though, did catch three - two females and one
male. The location was the large meadow (or prairie)
at the E. K. Murray Ranch 2 mi. S of Roy, Pierce Co.
In afternoon Johnsons took Dr. Benson and
2 to the Puget Sound Museum where we
looked at the specimens in the collection. It
is a rather disorganized collection consisting
of about 6000 specimens. Then we went over
to Alex Walker's sons home. He had just complete
his thesis on subspecies of Gophers.

After eating breakfast at Murray Johnsons, Dr. Benson and
I left for the Olympic Peninsula. We left Tacoma
and drove through Olympia, Shelton, Quilcene and
