July 23
A group of four very young golden mantle ground
squirrels was located in the Sagehen Camp yard.
Some children in camp started playing with them
causing one to die, this specimen, which was probably
a mole was put up as a skin.
July 24.
Went for a walk in Sagehen basin to an open area
one mile south from the main spring. This is in
the direction across Sagehen Creek from the road.
Here I climbed a tall white fir in order to make
observations on animals. Just after stopping and
sitting down on a branch I started to look around
me when a black bear came slowly walking in
my direction quite unaware of my presence in the
tree. He disappeared behind some trees and once
again reappeared at a slow pace. Having a
"predator call" with me I used it which had no
effect whatsoever on the animal. Trying to halt the
animal or attract its attention I smacked my lips
which scared him and caused him to immediately
run away in great haste. His fur was a pale
yellow in color with blackish feet.
July 26
Another one of the immature golden mantled
ground squirrels refined to on July 23 died
Aug 2
A mother pocket rat and three young (still stuck
to the mothers nipples) were captured by Pete,
Brussard near Reno. Were brought to Sagehen
Camp were they escaped. Next day they were
