California Quail
April 15. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
from bur clove patch at 0937. Birds
baggged in preening and muffled feathers,
then rested motionless (0945) in a
row along the NW fence in E-1,
6 birds closely bunched, one 8' 4 feet
from them one 9' 5 feet from the latter.
at 0950 I entered the pen to read
and service instruments, and 7
birds flew at once from North to
East corner, the last (♀) partly
ran and partly fluttered for short
distances above ground, as if
unable to fly.
April 16. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
1125 Seven birds flew from N to E
corner when I entered the pen; the
eighth (♀) flushed from Medicago
patch in (E-1) when I came within
a few feet, and ran fluttering to
Eucalyptus in B.7. I searched the
area where flushed in case she
was using the same bird nurse to
draw me from a nest, but found
nothing. Her appearance suggested
one wing broken or badly injured, as
she was fluttering mostly one-sidedly.
1345 I returned to pen for
instrument servicing. One ♀ and 2 ♂
