W.J. Francis 1963 California Quail April 15. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. from bur clove patch at 0937. Birds baggged in preening and muffled feathers, then rested motionless (0945) in a row along the NW fence in E-1, 6 birds closely bunched, one 8' 4 feet from them one 9' 5 feet from the latter. at 0950 I entered the pen to read and service instruments, and 7 birds flew at once from North to East corner, the last (♀) partly ran and partly fluttered for short distances above ground, as if unable to fly. April 16. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 1125 Seven birds flew from N to E corner when I entered the pen; the eighth (♀) flushed from Medicago patch in (E-1) when I came within a few feet, and ran fluttering to Eucalyptus in B.7. I searched the area where flushed in case she was using the same bird nurse to draw me from a nest, but found nothing. Her appearance suggested one wing broken or badly injured, as she was fluttering mostly one-sidedly. 1345 I returned to pen for instrument servicing. One ♀ and 2 ♂
