W. J. Francis 1963 California Quail April 14. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 1608 Birds in Behavior Lab per all out of sight under cover, after a day of frequent and sometimes heavy showers. I entered the pen and saw a pair & in the east corner (E-10) who ran along SE fence to the south corner (A-10). Five birds then flushed from the tall grass in E-7, only when I came within 3 or 4 feet, having previously passed about 8 feet away, of these, I observed 3 & and one & in the north corner (together before they ran down the NE fence line. I also noted a single & in the east corner after the other 7 noted above had left this area. Another shower started just after I returned to the observation but at 1630 with all quail again out of sight in cover. 1651 Three & and one & again in north corner, with last shower about past. I was unable to see color bands of these. 1711. Entered pen again I saw these four walking along SE fence; all were almost continually making shut
