California Quail
April 11. Hastings Reservation, Monterey
County, Calif. 1730. Saw a few
quail running through [illegible]
thicket above Davis house, but was
unable to distinguish whether it
was one or two pairs, or an un-
paired covey. 1820 Saw the covey
on the grassy plat just above Davis
house, and counted 13 birds as
they ran into the brush, also
heard another pair in oak grove
adjacent.
April 13. Strawberry Canyon Alameda County.
0750. Six quail flushed from Eucalyptus
(in Beharin Lab. Pen) in area B-7, one
flew to E-9 Eucalyptus, the others
to the ground in the E. corner (E-10).
During undisturbed observation until
0830 the birds remained out of sight in
this area. I then entered the pen
to get in position for a better view
and saw all 8 birds, who ran back
and forth when I came in sight.
They were not in obvious pairs but
remained well-brushed. The Black
& tended to remain by itself
rather than to follow the others
when the group ran off a short
distance. Left at 0840.
