California Quail
Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co., Calif.
Feb. 25. 1700 Observed covey in edge
of brush patch on west facing slope
west of Animal Behavior Lab. The birds
appeared near edge of brush from within
the patch, feeding around bares of Baccharis,
bushes gradually working out into the
gassy clearing. Since some were al-
ways obscured, number can only be
estimated at about 10 & 8 and 6 99;
preponderance & males quite definite.

the edge of the brush; at this time

hawk (probably Sharp-shinned) flew
out of the brush and up the hill
