W. J. Francis 1963 California Quail April 8. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. nearly motionless in E. corner, saw 6 along NE fence when they saw me at a distance of 100'. I could distinguish 4♂ and 3♀ in the group; 2♂ remained a few minutes after the others ran off. As the pen became shaded between 1730 and 1800, one pair moved out along SE fence, feeding a little, then resting motionless; two males did the same after a few minutes, but all were motionless when obs. ended at 1800. At 1802, on leaving Behavior Lab., a covey of at least 20 flushed just inside the west fence and flew into adjuring Eucalyptus grove and shrubbery. April 9. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 1410-1430 Quail in Pen bounded and resting in E corner. 1430 one ♀ flushed from mixed weeds in area E-6, joined other birds in E corner. As they ran along SE fence I counted all 8 birds. April 10. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 1110 Quail all loafing in E corner of pen in a single bunch.
