Francis 1963 California Quail April 6, Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. ran down to join 5 others along SE fence, when I entered the pen to check the rain gage, all birds retreated to cover in E corner within 2 or 3 minutes. April 7, Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 1105 In behavior like pen, flushed 5 birds in a group, followed in a few seconds by a single ?, from Medicage patch along NW fence. 4th pair in Eucalyptus in area B-7. Birds retreated to cover & remained out of sight until I left at 1133. April 8. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 1620 all 8 quail in pen together in E corner, ran along SE fence in pairs, except black & lagging; pairs remained together in group. 1700 After being quiescent seen last seen, The group I greet in the E corner showed a spurt of activity, with feeding and running back & forth along fence. This lasted only 2 minutes in my view, then they disappeared behind the Eucalyptus shrub. 1720 Entered pen to obtain view behind shrub; all quail standing
