California Quail
April 4. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
Quail in pen active 'running about'
with some feeding. 1057 Heard the
aggressive "Psen-pseu!", seemingly
from within pen. 1102. A lone male
seen along outside of NE fence,
calling loudly + urgently. An
answering call (with "assembly")
came from lower part of pen, could
be either inside or outside.
1120 Flushed 3 separate pairs
from cover in our clover along
NE fence; these pairs were
several feet from other pairs. They
ran down to corner and along
SE fence, where 2 & 3 outside
the fence engaged in "trice combat"
with one, sometimes two males in-
side. As near as I could tell the
"Psen!" calls were from the out-
side males, as were the assembly
calls given a little later; sometimes
two "Psen." calls overlapped, in-
dicating that both birds, in + out,
were giving them. 1125 Dis-
continued observations.
