W.V. Francois 1963 38, California Quail April 1. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co., Calif. remaining three quail were not seen. This is a little more ten- dency than previously seen to stay in pairs, but still not very marked. April 2. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County, No activity of quail in pen from 0614 to 0714, at which time I walked around outside the pen, but could still see no quail out of cover. Still no action by 0814 so I entered pen & flushed birds from Eucalyptus in E-8. 4 891 flew out together then 2 99, and another 7 for fall weeks. All ran out of sight immediately in grass + weeds. April 4. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 0825 Arrived at pen in Behavior Lab, only 2 quail visible - both 9& sitting at edge of bur clover along NW fence. 0905 2 pairs and 1 9 flushed from bur clover patch along NW fence. 0913 Counted all 8 birds in E corner, and along SE fence, generally moving in pairs. 1050. Quail calling outside the fence, assembly call distorted with more emphasis in final "Caw!"
