California Quail .
March 31. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
5 birds walked away from me into
the open + I could identify 88
Orange, 03, and Dark Green, and
ff Blade and Blue. These
5 then flew down to the opposite
corner, followed by another 4,
probably 05, mate of Orange 8.
As I approached the edge of the
Medicago patch, another 8
flew out (Red, by elimination),
then the last 4 (Yellow, if above
guess are right) when I stepped
into the patch. Red 8 + Blue 4
matched 10 days ago, yet did not
appear together today. Yellow 4
as always is least to flush and
stays closest to cover - today also
was associated with Red 8.
April 1. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
0814 Red 8 and a 4 resting next to
NW fence in pen; a 4 perched on
one leg on a box in shade of small
Eucalyptus shrub, in area C-7.
When I entered the pen to service
the recorder at 0825, the above
4 retreated into cover, and 2 pairs,
including that noted along NW fence,
ran down the NE fence line. The
