W. J. Francis 1963 California Quail March 30. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co., quail left in sight were 4 pairs feeding, which I should judge were three first seen at the evening fading last night and whose nesting territory is probably close by; a lone male which ran down the road after sitting as a perch post and calling for several minutes; and a second lone male giving alternate "Coo!" and assembly calls from a perch on the cattle chute log the road. March 30, Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 1700 Scattered a can of chicken feed. Seven quail together in the N corner of the pen. March 31. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 1540. Group of at least 5 quail in N corner of pen in behavior lab. partially concealed by weeds. Omitted justifiable. At 1600 I walked around pen; 7 birds walked from N to E corner, then returned as I came near east corner. As I approached them, they were partially concealed in a thick patch of Medicago.
