California Quail
March 30, McMillan Ranch, San Luis
Orioso County, California.
Vibration of assembly calls, cluckeningo,
and some "[illegible]" notes, as they
the birds stirred around and began to
leave the covert. First bird was seen
to fly down at 0510, most were
out by 0520. The birds left the
covert singly, with a few seconds
separation between birds, some
flying to the ground, more flying
off nearly level to a more distant spot,
and a few flying
into adjacent trees first. The
assembly calls attained at maximum
right after this, and died down
as apparently, the birds located
their mates. About 80 birds fed
for a while in back of the duck
house, but gradually scattered by
pairs, walking off up the hill
to picture of a stubble field,
or
into the weeds along the canyon;
a group of four pairs flew from
this area into the enclosed area
in front of the house. Two lone
cocks were seen, and also two
lone hens; the latter apparently
found their mates after a short
time. By 0530 the only
