W.J. Francis 1963. California Quail March 29. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. 1734. Heard "Squill" call, more birds coming in. By 1810 had counted, with some inaccuracies due to movement of the birds, 50 pairs and 4 lone cocks; with some birds missed, and a few moving out of the area, I estimate the total number at 120, compared to an estimated 200 last night. Around 1800 observed about 3 rather intensive chases, one in the air with a ? chasing a ?; and heard many "Squill!" calls, which had been abroad in the earlier feeding. No groups flew in from the hillside as occurred yesterday. Presumably the reduction in total number is due to the fact that more distant pairs are roosting in the nearby area rather than returning here. Aggressiveness as much were evident today; at least one male giving "Caw!" call in the feeding area; and pairing seems to be essentially complete. March 30. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
