California Quail
March 29. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
1734. Heard "Squill" call, more birds coming
in. By 1810 had counted, with some
inaccuracies due to movement of the
birds, 50 pairs and 4 lone cocks;
with some birds missed, and a few
moving out of the area, I estimate the
total number at 120, compared to
an estimated 200 last night. Around
1800 observed about 3 rather intensive
chases, one in the air with a ?
chasing a ?; and heard many
"Squill!" calls, which had been
abroad in the earlier feeding. No
groups flew in from the hillside
as occurred yesterday. Presumably
the reduction in total number is due
to the fact that more distant
pairs are roosting in the nearby
area rather than returning here.
Aggressiveness as much were evident
today; at least one male giving
"Caw!" call in the feeding area;
and pairing seems to be essentially
complete.
