California Quail
Nov. 19. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County
0910 all 11 birds left cover to feed on
freshly scattered grain in the center
clearing. Males tended to remain in
a sidlee group, females were
scattered. 3 ♂ and 1 ♀ went to
water hole; the former drank
while standing in the water, the
♀ only walked through the pool.
After 5 minutes feeding, all birds
ran back to cover as heavy machinery
outside the Behavior Station increased
the noise level.
Nov. 30. 0901. Birds in Behavior hole
pen left cover in E-10 corner and
ran to feed on grain which I
had just scattered only 3 minutes
after I had left the pen. All 11
birds present. Some tendency for
segregation by sex, but groups are
shifting as they feed. After 8
minutes of very active feeding,
The groups wandered off into
semi-cover; Orange ♂ perched on
instrument shelter. Feeding con-
tinued at a slower pace.
