California Quail.
Nov. 9. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
cleared area, walked rapidly back
to E-10 corner, followed by the other
5 one minute later. No social
distinctions were noted, no sign
of pairing or peck order.
Nov. 13. Birds in Behavior lab. pen were
much more "jumpy" on this bright
clear day after rain; the covey
flushed into the air from E-10, and
flew to E-1, rather than running
up along the fence as usual;
They then flew back again when
I was in the opposite side of the
enclosure, with practically no dis-
turbance. All birds apparently are
present, crippled female did not fly.
Nov. 16. 0830. All 11 birds present,
apparently hungry in cold windy
weather, as all came into the center
clearing to feed on grain within 2-3
minutes after I returned to the
but after checking instruments.
Still "jumpy" - when I squeezed in -
side the hut, all birds saw a
flew to cover, over half taking to
the air.
