W.J. Francis 1963 California Quail March 29. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. Portuguese Canyon. I heard numerous assembly calls, choking notes of several quail, and aggressive "Pseu-pseu!" notes, the latter twice from 2 birds at once, suggesting active fighting. 1115. The same birds, presumably, have been staging a calling duel for about 15 minutes across the canyon, one bird altern- ating a "Caw!" call, sometimes two, once up to four, with a series of Assembly calls. 1119. Only me bird heard in a long series of "Caw" calls, not spaced 8 seconds, a few a little longer, for a total of 12 calls. 1637. First pair of quail appeared on feeding ground in back of ranch house, almost at once retreated into brush. 1652. Baited feeding area with grain. 1655. Two pairs emerged from weedy area behind windmill I began feeding, soon joined by the first pair which again emerged from cover. 1722. Heard assembly calls from several directions. 1733 Additional pair coming in from the canyon increased number to 18 feeding together.
