W.N. Francois 1964. California Quail Oct.19. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. These birds came at once to the vicinity of the water hole but fed on the grain I just put out before drinking. All, as far as could be determined, took both grain + water. The birds were in one compact group, within the group all O's were closer to- together than they were to the Q's. 0940. See 11 birds, 6 in the first group, followed by the other in about one minute, moved to the base of the B-7 eucalyptus, and for about two minutes engaged in a restless moving about, the group as a whole forming a rough circle, which rotated irregularly as the individual birds made short runs along the circumference. Each run had the appearance of the be- ginning of a chase, but although always near another bird did not seem to be directed at another. 0944. Cavy wandered off into the usual cover along the river fence. Oct.21. Birds in the Behavior Lab. pen remained quiet under cover of brush, for 15 minutes after I put out feed
