W.J. Francis 1964 California Quail Oct.12. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 0820 all 11 birds in the Behavior lab. pen came to center clearing to eat and drink only 5 minutes after I filled water bottle & put out feed. Natural food is apparently in rather short supply, and continued dry weather means drinking water re- quirement remains. 0825 all birds ran & flew to cover, no disturbance apparent to me. Dust bath has been much used, with many body feathers there. Molt of young birds is now complete and they cannot be distinguished from the adults with binoculars at 50 feet - except by lack of leg bands. Since light today is poor, it may still be possible to distinguish lighter legs of the immatures under better conditions. Oct.19. 0934. Covey in the Behavior Lab pen came running to center of the enclosure in a compact group, only 5 minutes after I left the pen, except for one ? (Coeen?) that remained in the background for about two minutes.
