California Quail
Sept.27. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County -
Q legs and lack of a bound. 0845 The
birds retreated to cover + continued
to move about with coming into the
Open. 1851. First bird flew into roost
in D-9, most of the others nearby.
1853 Green Q and the young Q foraging
near instrument shelter in D-4, then
after 1 minute one of them flew
into D-4 eucalyptus roost. 1855
Orange Q, the youngest Q, and a
Q came into same area. 1858 Two
or three flew into D-9 roost. 1900
Green + another (young?) Q again fed
+ dusted near D-4 roost for a minute
and then returned to roost. 1901
Two Qs came up from E-9 to
D-4 area. Considerable motion
in E-9 roost. 1907 Last bird in
sight flew into roost. 1908 Two
birds flew down from D-4 roost,
then disappeared in cover.
Oct.5. At Behavior lab pen. 0900 Quail
Feeding in E-10 near brush piles, after
having remained fairly close in cover
after I had been in the pen 0830 to
0840. 0912 Birds back in cover without
having come to pull water + feed.
