California Quail
Sept.21. Strawbery Canyon, Alameda County.
Quail in the Behavior lab. pen re-
maned very close in cover during
observations from 0925 to 0945, this
in spite of not having had food or
water supplied for 4 days and
water points having been completely
dried up until filled this morning.
Warm dry weather and strong
gusty winds typify abnormal
weather. 0946. Quail assembly
calls (at least two birds) outside
the pen, with no response inside
Sept.24. Quail in Behavior lab-pen
again very quiet in cover when I came
to replenish water & food on warm
dry & windy day, from 0900 - 0930.
Sept.27. Began observations in Behavior lab.
pen at 1820, birds soon began to
stir and at 1835- all eleven came to
center to feed, drink and dust. One
young bird still incompletely molted
and easily distinguished. The five other
males appear the same, one of them is
a young bird with molt just about
completed. the immature female
was seen drinking appears fully
molted but identified by light color
