California Quail
Aug.27. Hunter Higgett Military Reservation,
Monterey County: 1207 A covey of 15-20
at gazzler "TP" off Angyle Road. 12 seen
clearly as they ran up the hill were
all adult. No further activity here
up to 1237. Proceeded to check gazzler
at "TOBheF" - no quail or signs.
1300 At quail enclosure around
natural seepage pool at "To Red N",
flushed 40-50 quail, no young
seen. No quail seen along
the road on the Reservation; a
total of about 150 adults were
seen today, with no young birds,
although there may have been
a few young not identified as
such in the last flush flushed;
a total of 20 unidentifiable young
is the maximum possible estimate,
zero is more probable.
Aug.31. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
1740. All birds in the Behavior Lab.
Pen came to center clearing to feed
and drink about 5 minutes after
I filled water hole + scattered grain.
For the first time I could identify
one of the 3 young as a 5?, The
other two are 9?. Birds remained
in a compact bunch, no pairing %,
