California Quail
Aug.27. Hunter Higgett M.R., Monterey County.
All birds were full grown adults, with
no young seen. 0920 a covey of
30 adults, no young seen, feeding
on grassy dault between MP hut and
the barrades. When disturbed this
covey flew into a nearby oak - in
flight the molt appeared to be
complete, with no ragged plumages
noted. MP's in the game program
report that there are many quail,
young have been seen in 3 different
age groups (one opinion that the
quail have raised 3 broods).
1005 Disturbed a covey, probably the
same bunch, all adults, at the mouth
of the brushy canyon above the MP
hut. About half these birds were in
trees, and flushed birds in the pen
tended to fly into nearest trees, while
birds in the brush would run to the ground.
1020 Returning to MP hut, found a covey
of 19 feeding on the nearby flat - these
are probably in addition to those seen
up the canyon who scattered in the
brush. May be 40-50 birds in this
locality, no young seen. 1030 A covey
of 15 crossed the road from our
front of the Hacienda, and forged
along the headquarters area fence.
