W.J. Francis 1963 California Quail March 29. McMillan Ranch, Sanhui Obrigo Co: in right, so that it is possible one of these males was attempting to join a mated pair, & eliciting the aggressive response from the mated male. 0915. Left the house at 0800 and walked to Marin Spring & up the hill toward Pole-line Ridge. Heard frequent widely scattered assembly calls interspersed with occasional "Cow!" calls. In cross-crossing the lower part of this slope I started only one quail, a 8 which ran uphill across a juniper clearing into low brush. Along with "Cws!" calls I twice heard "Plea-pse!" responses. 1000. Proceeding around the end of Pole-line Ridge, I heard almost continuous assembly, interspersed with "Cow!" calls. As I moved into upper Portugese Canyon, with very steep bushy slopes on both sides, I heard no calls of any kind, but one bird flushed silently near the stream bed and flew uphill a short distance. 1100 While watching the presumed coyote den from the west slope of
