California Quail
Aug.26, McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
160 birds in quail brush near fence
in part of ranch house - all appeared
to be adult. Caramatti Canyon 1620.
A covey of 40-50 quail ran from
around the gully up into brushy
hillside as I drove up. Various calls
heard from the hillside. These became
fewer + more distant, only two
distant assembly calls being heard
from 1707 to 1719, when a bird
was heard calling fairly closely,
as well as one further off, distant call
heard immediately after the closer
call. Ended observations at 1722.
McMillan Ranch 1940 to 1950 observed
two groups of quail feeding
and approaching roost around
the old house. One covey counted
43 birds accurately, the second
estimated at 40, with about 10
others scattered. All birds are
apparently full-grown adults
with no young seen.
Aug.27. Hunter Liggett Military Reservation,
Materney County. 0700 Saw 12 quail
crossing creek in back of San Antonio's
Mission, apparently leaving roost in
oak trees where one bird flushed.
