W. J. Francis 1964. California Quail Aug.25. Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., 0721. Further inspection gave a count of 8 young birds in addition to the group of 10, for a total of 18 definite young. There are 20 adults without young that have remained Together. The eight other birds being most probably parents of the young. 0725 Another adult pair appeared from the creek bed. 0728. The group of adults moved off beyond the Bell house, with 16 young + 8 adults remaining in front of the house. 0733 Adult ♀ with 2 or 3 young feeding on fig leaves around the water valve, + drinking water, while adult ♂ + 5 young feeding nearby. This ♀ shows a faint outline of ♂ throat pattern - not like the de- veloping pattern of a young ♂ - suggesting either avian disease or hormone in- balance due to strain of raising young in a year like this. 0740 A group of 10, 4 adults and 6 young, came up from the gulley, and are feeding beyond the Bell house. Probable total 24 young and 34 adult birds. Ended observations as most birds wandered out of sight.
