California Quail
Aug. 25. Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co.
0655. The local corn & quail feeding
in front of Bell house, counted 13
adults and 9 young. The latter in
two groups of 4 joined by another
single one. Molt obvious in adults,
one female completely tailless. Adults
drink from the drip around the
valve of a fire hose outlet walking
up the sloping hose to reach
it, 0706 Total of 26 birds counted,
10 young together, 9 nearer, then
a 8 came to feed with the
young birds; main group, all or
nearly all adults feeding 30 feet
away from the group of young.
0710. A group of about 8 birds, in-
cluding 2 young joined the group
near the water valve. 0712 After
a brief run to cover, birds scattered,
and I counted 46; group of 10
young still together in the same
place. These birds appear to be
in strictly juvenile plumage, with
no signs of adult plumage. One
older bird with them was noted to
have partial juvenile & plumage
(some mottled remiges, partial
black throat), indicating there,
may be other older young.
