California Quail
Aug 24. Carmel Valley, Monterey County.
The birds that crossed the road
fed in stubble of the field until
startled, when they flew into the
brushy hillside, with again much
calling. A group of about 4
or 5 in the roadside weeds flew
rather weakly and may be younger
(and appeared smaller) than
the 9-10 weeks of most young.
Estimate 50-60 birds in this covey.
Hasting Natural History Reservation, Monterey County. 1800 a covey of 19
quail feeding near the White house,
with 8 others in the tall grass
of the adjacent meadow. Of these
27 birds, at least 11 appeared
to be young.
1930. Two pairs of adults fraying
around the White house, then ran
off down the road. 1945 No other
quail seen in circling local
headquarters area - a number
of calls heard, particularly
around rocks on hillside, indicating
the birds have already gone to
roost. Sun has disappeared behind
western hills, but it is still quite
light.
