W.N. Francis 1964 California Quail Aug.20. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 1405. Three birds noted in brush pile in E-10 when I arrived at station; when I entered the pen at 1410 5 birds flew from the D-4 eucalyptus down to E-10; a few seconds later the crippled & dead dove from the same place. Aug.24. 0925 Quail in Behavior lab. Pen grouped in E-10 and running along the lower fence. Flushed in two groups of 7 and 4 when I entered the pen. 1707 Carmel Valley Road. Came upon a covey of quail along the road between gassy & brushy hills, and a flat pasture, lular snares along Tularcitos Creek. The birds ran into cover on both sides, with much calling and clucking, then many crossed the road again, most going toward the water. There were many young birds estimated to be a little over half those seen, nearly full size but with black throat color pattern incomplete in the gray males; identification of the young females was uncertain.
