California Quail
Aug. 16. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
Green) one ♀, and 2 young to
dust bath and water hole. 1940 an
adult pair with 3 young, feeding in
a group in C-8, below the water
hole. 1941. 8 adults + 3 young
in center; feeding, dusting, and
drinking. Identified ♂ with the
3 young as Orange. Family group
seen all together, including a ♀
not identified. 1944. Red ♂ alone
near hut in C-3 - indicates either
no survivors of his breed, or he is
failing to look after any survivors.
1952. Seven adults + 3 young in
the center clearing - with
shifting around of the adults.
The three young dusted and frosted
in the vicinity as the remaining adult
(♂) perched in B-7 eucalyptus.
1955. One young remained in dust
bath with Yellow ♀, the other two
young running to cover. As Yellow
♀ and the young one ran toward E-8,
the perched ♂ flew to the ground
and ran rapidly toward this same
area. Clucking could be heard
from this area also. 2000. Birds
going to roost in eucalyptus shrubs
in D-4 and E-9 both.
