California Quail
Aug.12. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County:
0925. Adult ? perched on brush above area
where two young were located, identified
as Red. 0928. 4 ?♂ and 2 ?♀ together,
other ?♀ and young barely glimpsed in
glass about 5 feet away; then the group
congregated in and around the brush
pile in E-10, one ?♂ and one ?♀ perched
on a limb 1½ feet off the ground.
These two birds preening, others just
resting. 0940 Evided 1 horn alternation
from the hut, with one ?♂ perched on
brush, all other birds concealed.
1020 Flushed birds while working
in the pen. All 8 adults flew
together; no young bird flew after
two minutes when I came within
alert as foot while cutting weeds.
Aug.14. 0815 Eight adults and one young
bird ran together from E-10 corner as
I entered the Behavior lab. pen to
service instruments. No farther activity,
left the station at 0835.

1930. Definite sight of a second young
