California Quail
Aug 5. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
fifth young bird flew in a circle, came
back to the brush pile in the corner,
and escaped through the corner
gap, above the fine wire barrier
which extends up 2½ feet from
the ground. I removed brush from
the corner so this route is no
longer accessible.
Aug. 6. 0615 Birds flushed from
area A-1 as I approached the
Behavior lab. pen. 0630 One bird
flew up into E-9 eucalyptus.
0640 Both adults & young foraging
in E-10 and along SE fence. Activity
deceased slowly until no birds at
all in sight by 0710, 0715 Orange
T perched 2 feet high in
brush pile in E-10, several
chicks running around in this
area. 0820 Birds flushed from
E-10 corner when I entered
the pen, only two young seen,
in the area where I removed
brush from the E-10 corner
yesterday. I found 14 eggs
in a crude nest, only a
depression in the eucalyptus
leaves - none were hatched, since
