California Quail
March 28, McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
1827 Quail started going to roost
in oaks and artificial roosts; occasional short aggressive episodes.
March 29, McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
at 0515 heard "Pee-pem" calls of
anyon from roost near house. I did
not wake again till 0545, when a
series of assembly calls were heard
and quail (apparently the last)
were seen leaving the roost -
one bird flew back up into the
roost; several birds on the ground
congregated near individual shrubs.
Watched birds dispersing from roosting
area between 0600 and 0620. The
birds left brush area in pairs almost
without exception and walked out
into the pasture or up the
hillside south of the road. Two
male quail were heard giving
"Cow!" calls, interspersed with
"Assembly" calls, from perches on
juniper posts; twice, the cow
calls were answered by a
series of angry "Pee-pem" squill
notes from birds on the ground
(at my right), both times
with only one crowing male
