California Quail
July 31, Wildcat Canyon, Contra Costa County.
Other 9, which appeared to be 4
weeks old.
Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
0900 Eight adults and 5 chicks
foraging in A-10 corner. While
birds kept moving in corners and
along fences, they did not come
out into the open at all.
Aug.3. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
0940 Three 8's and one 4 patrolling the
fence in A-10 and B-10, with another
pair visible in the A-10 corner - some
chicks possibly with this last pair.
All birds soon became quiescent in this
area until 1000 when I ended my
observation from the hut. 1030 a
search of the pen revealed a dead
chick in E-7 next to the fence - very
likely the one recently found
injured. Body was too consumed with
ants & maggots to determine any
injuries. During the search flushed
all eight adults, apparently - five
in one bunch, - and 4 chicks who
followed parents on the ground to A-1,
then remained hidden when the
adults flew until I approached and
they flew the full length of the pen.
