California Quail
July 28. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County
about six young along the fence in
C-10 and D-10. 1857 Red ♂ to center
clearing. 1858 another ♂ and two
young joined Red ♂ for a few seconds,
then ran (young birds flew 15-20
feet) back to cover). 1906 Red ♂
and Yellow ♀ to center, followed
by 14. Green ♂ and Green ♀ - no
young. 1908 These birds returned
to cover, and Red ♂ again came
to the center. 1930. Three ♂,
two ♀, and one young in the
center clearing, while Orange ♂
along the fence in C-10; three
♀ ident. as Green and Yellow.
Note that Blue and 05 ♀ were not
identified during this period.
July 30. While setting mouse-traps and
cutting thistles in the Behavior hal. pen
the quail flushed and flew back
and forth along the NE fence. at
1435 a young quail flew full tilt
into the lower fence in E-10. I picked
it up, and found no obvious broken
bones, probably suffering mostly from
shock. This bird weighed 45.0 grams.
After sprinkling it with a little water,
I placed it under a Baccharis shrub
