California Quail
June 9. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County-
1930 to 2020 toured the ranch to
observe quail. Large scattered covey
at the old house going to roost, no
evident pairs. Not seen near the
old granary or over the hill near the
adobe ruins. At the west end of the
ranch along this canyon, started
a good-sized group from Atriplex
hedge-rows. One & was attending
a chick estimated at 4 weeks;
a small group consisted of about
4 evident pairs, possibly two more;
a remainder of about 60 birds ran
off in a single well-bracketed covey.
June 10. 850 Took 15 quail in the
trap in front of ranch house, 13 of
which could be classed as having
immature or adult primary coverts,
with two doubtful because of missing
covers as before, no more than one
cover was molted in the immatures.
Birds taken and lost primary molted,
and banded as follows:
