W.J. Francis 1964. California Quail June 9. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County Between 0630 and 0720 saw an estimated 500-600 quail between the ranch house and the old house, in six coveys of 50 to 200 birds, plus a number of scattered stragglers, none of which appeared to be breeding pairs. 1310 Began observations in the vicinity of Marlin Spring and Portuguese Canyon. 1332 Two ♀♀ walked out of barley field across Marlin Canyon to a pile of dead Juniper branches, joined ♀ after a moment by a male; then they all returned to the barley followed by 11 half-grown young, estimated to be 5 weeks old. A second ♀ then followed the group. No further birds seen here nor on a 1-hour walk down Marlin Canyon, up Portuguese Canyon, & back along barley field. 1600 (See journal for twin corrections prior to this). Took 19 birds in the trap in front of the yard — these could be separated as to age, presumably, by the presence of one (only) mottled upper primary covert on some, with coverts present & no sign of molt on the others. One ♂ (♂ #6 prin.) and one ♀ (ad., #6 prin.)
