1964.
California Quail.
June 5. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
with lowered head at the other 9
which accompanied him to the
clearing. The other pair went
back into weedy cover. 1719. With
two pairs in clearing an outside of
little top, both pairs ran back
into weeds as Green 9 came to
water hole then over to D-4. Saw
Black 9 behind eucalyptus in E-4
after she disappeared in that area.
1725. Reentered pen & checked nests-
A-5 nest, hen still off. D-9 nest,
hen had returned, & flushed
from nest with me at a distance
of 8 feet. She took cover in nearby
corner E-10, & I identified her as
Yellow - she is the cripple. Eggs
in nest 13 as before. Left station
at 1725.
June 8. McMillan Ranch, San Luis
Obispo County. 1575. Set up and
baited two quail traps, and took
24 birds in back of the ranch
house by 1630. Collected 2
adult 9's (one previously banded
#18454) and two 9's. Banded
the remainder, examined state
of molt, and released them.
