California Quail
June 1. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
Excess weeds I did not see any of the
birds in the enclosure - probably
all in the tall grass in the south
quarter, where I did not go.
Noted a remex on the ground near
the instrument shelter - is this a
sign of possible brooding? 1125
Ended 30 minutes of observation with no
activity by quail, and again entered
the pen to check birds. Flushed
3 birds from south corner, found
hens on nest in both A-5 and
D-9 (approaching from below I did
not flush the latter this time).
The three other birds are un-
accounted for.
June 5. 1630. Hen incubating nest
in A-5, did not approach D-9 nest.
1635- Blue + Lt. Green pair came to feed
rapidly on grain in D-4 for about 2
minutes, then walked to the edge
of the dust bath, and suddenly
flew into cover in E-9. 1645. Attempted
unsuccessfully to catch & on nest in
A-5 by placing 2' x 3' trap over her
on the nest. Due to thick vegetation
and uneven ground, she was able
to escape within seconds after
