California Quail
May 30. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
I approached closer than 5-6 feet. This
is the crippled female, believed to be
Yellow. Nest in B-3 unattended,
still 14 eggs, + apparently abandoned;
a 15th egg not previously noted
was found on the ground about
a foot away. Two males ran
along fence as we neared the E-10
corner. Returned to hut to observe
at 1907. 1911. Soon after having an
assembly call whistle, a F flew
down from a eucalyptus and
alighted on top of the pen.
1924. A F came into view in A-5,
stood for about 20 seconds 10
feet away from the nest, then
ran into thick thistle patch.
1932. A pair came into view in
C-6 drank at the water hole
and fed in center clearing -
identified as Green F, Blade M
(both young birds). 1934 Another
Pair, Blue F and Light Green M,
came to center clearing from
D-6 (also both young). Both
retreated to cover by 1936. At
1944 heard a series of quail
calls from a single bird outside
