California Quail
May26. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
nest with 9 eggs, also unattended, in
D-9. Several ??, no ? noted, ran out
from E-10 corner as I approached.
The latter (D-9) nest was smaller
than the others and the eggs were
arranged asymmetrically on one side
as if leaving room for more. Observed
the pen from the hut until 15:36,
during which time no birds appeared.
When I then opened the door into the
pen, about 6 birds flew up from
tall thick grass in A-8 & settled
in A-10. Nests in A-5 and B-3 still
unattended.
May28. 1330 Checked nests in Behavior
Lab. pen: B-3 still 14 eggs, unattended,
may be abandoned; D-9 now has 11
eggs, 2 more than 2 days ago, still
active; A-5 being incubated by ?,
which I did not disturb. 1401 Bird
? came from E-5 into D-4. Then flew to
top of instrument shelter. after 20 minutes
flew down to E-3, then into weed cover.
